The material for Symphonia Harmoniæ Cælestium Revelationum is entirely extracted from folio 480v, column c, of the Wiesbaden Codex manuscript, dated to the late XIIth century. This folio contains a fragment of Hildegard von Bingen’s allegorical morality play Ordo Virtutum. Some passages from this page are interpreted graphically——rather than through a conventional reading of neumatic notation——and are inserted into the piece, disrupting the melodic line. This line is based on several canonical interpretations of Hildegard’s play: the free rhythms of the singers are transcribed successively, one over the other, creating a complex web of rhythmic figures that enrich it both timbrally and microtonally, fully exploiting the capabilities of the horn.
